What Are Circuit Breakers?
Circuit breakers are electrical devices which are used in electrical panels. They monitor and control the amount of electricity that goes through the electrical wiring and are important to make sure that the electrical system of a house or any kind of facility is functioning properly. This is why when there is a circuitry problem, it is vital to check if the circuit breakers are causing it and if they need to be replaced.
Although a lot of individuals today automatically choose to buy new circuit breakers once they find out that the ones they have need to be replaced, more and more are realizing that buying used breakers might be the better option. This is because used breakers are actually just as good as new ones and are priced a lot cheaper. There are also plenty of places where you can buy them. Many online and offline stores have them and you would usually have a lot of options for the types of used breakers that you can purchase.
You need to remember that it is always advisable to have a licensed electrician, regardless of the level of knowledge you have in breakers and electrical systems, to determine which breakers you need for your home or office, but it would also be helpful to have some knowledge on the types of used breakers that you can buy. Here is a simple guide on the different types of used breakers that you can choose from.
The first type would be low voltage circuit breakers. This type of used breakers is the ones which most homeowners use. These breakers are small and can easily be replaced. They are typically installed inside breaker panels to allow easy access. The smallest type of low voltage circuit breakers would be the miniature circuit breakers or MCBs. MCBs can carry electrical currents below 100 amps and can stand a charge of up to 1000 amps. The low voltage breakers which are most commonly used would be the molded case circuit breakers or MCCBs that can carry 1000 amps and has the ability to withstand currents up to 10000 amps. These used breakers are considered to be magnetic circuit breakers since they make use of a solenoid which electromagnetically powered in order to break the circuit in the event that too much power is running through it.
There are also the medium voltage circuit breakers. These used breakers are able to withstand about 1000 to 72000 volts, depending on the model. These are often used by large buildings and facilities and are either installed on the roof in switchboxes that are enclosed or indoors inside cabinets. There are also several varieties of medium voltage circuit breakers and these would be: vacuum, SF6 and air circuit breakers. Vacuum circuit breakers work by maintaining a power arc inside a vacuum. This means that air is allowed back into the breaker once the breaker is tripped, which would then stop the arc. SF6 circuit breakers have a power arc which is generated in a chamber that has sulfur hexaflouride gas. This gas reacts with the presence of a higher-than-average voltage through increasing in density, which then stops the arc. As for the air circuit breakers, they have two spring-loaded contacts which are positioned close together within an air-filled environment. The spring-loaded contacts come apart once the breaker is tripped and this would separate the contacts.
The last type of used breakers that you can purchase would be the high voltage circuit breakers. These would be breakers that are able to handle over 72500 volts of electricity. These are commonly used outdoors and are installed in chain-link enclosures that are along power lines that carry high voltage electric currents. This type of breakers are operated using a solenoid which, once there is too much power running through it, reacts to fill the chamber where power is flower with a kind of inert material. This inert material can be oil, gas or other inert material which stops the electric current from arcing from a contact on to the next until the circuit breaker is reset.
When buying a used breaker, you need to make sure that you are buying the correct type to avoid any type of accidents or problems. Aside from understanding the different types available, it is also advisable to consult an electrician to be sure that you are getting the right one that you need. You should also check if the breaker has been properly reconditioned and verify if it comes with a warranty. If you are buying from an online merchant, you may want to call their customer service or support department first to ask all of the questions you have regarding the used breakers that they are selling. Through doing all these, you should be able to buy a used breaker that would be able to function properly without having to spend too much money.

Welcome to the New Generation of Honda Engines
The King Motorsports / Mugen Civic Si made its debut at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) convention in Las Vegas. The car showed off its K20 DC5R engine which has a limited slip differential and a 6-speed transmission. The engine had been modified to produce 240hp. The K20 represents Honda's next generation engine. It does not run on a timing rubber belt. It runs by a timing chain. The engine heads are reversed so that intake and exhaust swap position. Three additional versions of the K20 (K20A, K20B, K20C) engine are available; each sporting subtle variations in their power train assembly.
The new Honda Insight has improved immeasurably since it was first launched back in 1999. Today's difficult economic times makes the Insight the right answer for the customer on a budget. There has been an obvious slowdown in car sales which is the first reason why the Insight could be the next big thing. The Insight's base sticker price is significantly lower than any competitor model with similar features. Even if a buyer splurges for a fully loaded Insight, it won't cost much more than a base model competitor.
Auto makers are making considerable improvements in hybrid engine technology. It now looks as though hybrid is the way of the future and more consumers are turning to these cars to help save them money. Hybrids not only save consumers money at the gas tank but at tax time as well. Depending on the Hybrid, consumers could see up to a 00 tax credit, and who doesn't like a break from the government?
Honda's release of the CR-Z concept car pushes the limits on the marriage of a true sports car to the latest in technology. The new class of vehicle is ready to move Honda even further from its competition in the market for hybrid engines. Honda even calls the CR-Z its lightweight sports car; an indication of Honda's confidence in the CR-Z's ability to match its performance to its sporty good looks. The look and feel of a Sporty Hi-Tech vehicle is all that can be said about the CR-Z interior design.
Finally, production of the stimulating "green" cars has been confirmed by Honda. The hydrogen fuel cell based FCX car along with a low weight hybrid sports car will both go into production. This now makes its debut in the near future a reality. Then, the FCX concept will be used in the all new FCV being marketed to both retail and fleet customers in Japan and the U.S.A. The FCV provides the safety comforts which everyone expects from Honda vehicles.
Specifications for the Honda V Flow fuel cell have not yet been provided. However, Honda assures us that the fuel cell stack provides performance equal to almost all current sedans. At the same time, zero emissions are produced except for heat and water.
It's obvious; customers have a lot to look forward to as Honda continues to look far into the future of hybrid vehicle engineering in support of an entirely new generation.

Selecting a Home Standby Generator - A How-To Guide
How to Select a Home Standby Generator
Blizzards, Ice Storms, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, a careless driver striking a power pole -- there is no end to the natural and man-made disasters that can shut the power down at your home. In the past people would light some candles, fire up the gas stove, and tough it out. But now, with most homes being nearly 100% electric, losing power can be more than an inconvenience; it can be life-threatening.
Fortunately standby power generators, once exclusively used by factories and large companies, are within the financial reach of any home owner. They're safe, quiet, and efficient. In fact, the only issue is: Which generator is right for you?
What's the Watt?
Generators are sold by wattage rating. If you were absent from school on that day, you might not know that wattage is sort of the electrical equivalent to horsepower. Remember Ohm's law? Don't worry, I didn't either. Anyway, Watts = Volts x Amps and Amps = Watts/Volts. While theoretical knowledge is a wonderful thing, here's some more practical information to help you select the right home standby generator for you.
Power Consumption Calculations
Most every electrical appliance has a tag somewhere that will tell you at least two of the numbers that you need to calculate the right size emergency generator for you. If you have volts and amps, you can use Ohm's law to calculate the watts.
Of course, if they list the watts, then you're all set -- almost. Electrical motors require up to four times as much wattage to start up than they do to keep running. It's got something to do with inertia and friction, but I was absent on that day as well. So, a good rule of thumb is to multiply the wattage on the label (or the wattage that you calculated) by 4 if you're dealing with any electrical appliance that has a motor.
When it comes to calculating the wattage required to run electrical lighting, you could have been absent from school for the entire year and still get this one right. It's printed right there on top of the bulb. That means, if you want to power a 60 watt light bulb, then you'll consume... yep, 60 watts of power.
The following chart lists the average wattage for the average household appliances. Use these figures only as a guideline as your appliances may be extraordinarily un-average.
Typical Home Appliances Wattage Requirement Appliance
(multiply Watts x 4 to determine startup requirements for appliences with motors)
Coffee Maker 1750
0 Dishwasher (no heat) 700 (2800)
1400 Electric Fry Pan 1300
Electric Range 8-inch element 2100
Microwave Oven 625 watts
Refrigerator or Freezer 700 (2800)
Clothes Washer 1150 (4600)
Electric Clothes Dryer 5750 (23,000)
Furnace (gas or fuel oil) 1/8 Horsepower 300 (1200)
1/6 Horsepower 500 (2000)
1/4 Horsepower 600 (2400)
1/3 Horsepower 700 (2800)
1/2 Horsepower 875 (3500)
Lights as printed on bulb
Radio 50 to 200 0
Color Television 300
10,000 BTU Central Air Conditioner 1500
If you were planning to power everything listed above then, at first glance, you might think that you're going to need a 30,000 watt generator. Maybe buying a small nuclear reactor would make more sense. But wait! Look what happens when you apply a little power management logic to the formula.
Power Management 101
The first thing to remember is that the maximum wattage for anything motor-driven is only used when the motor first starts up. Moments later it drops down to the normal running wattage. So, you need to select a generator that outputs enough wattage to handle the appliance with the highest startup rating. Then, simply make sure no two appliances are started at the same moment and you can dramatically cut down your calculation.
The second thing to remember is that the total of the running wattage column is only an issue if you plan to run every appliance, all at the same time, and all day and night. So you see, by simply mapping out a reasonable power management schedule you can cut way back on the size of your power requirements. For most people a 2500 watt generator will do the trick.
Fuel Requirements
Although diesel-powered generators exist, they are typically used in commercial and industrial environments. For us homeowners there is a choice between gasoline and liquid propane gas (LPG). As a rule of thumb, the LPG models run quieter than the gasoline models. Fuel consumption varies depending upon the horsepower rating of the generator's engine. An 8 HP model will run about 10 hours +-, at full load, while an equivalent LPG model runs 1 hour for every 5 lbs of fuel that it burns.
Start Your Engines
There are 3 basic ways to fire up a generator. Some models come with a recoil starter, just like a lawn mower's starter, other come with an electric (battery) push-button starter, and other comes with an auto start switch, also called a transfer switch, that must be wired directly to your home's existing electrical system.
If you lose power frequently, or there is some device in your home that must remain powered on at all times for health or security reasons, then a transfer switch-equipped standby generator will virtually ensure that you have power even if you are not home when the outage occurs.
In Summary
Now that you have the basic facts, go ahead and make your own wattage consumption chart. Then devise your personal power management program, decide if you need a transfer switch or not, and go shopping for the peace of mind that an emergency generator will bring in times of trouble.
